Abstracts: 'The Cultural Politics of a National Canon in Ireland’ provides a broad grounding in the attempts to establish a common and authoritative national narrative in Ireland in the form of a canon. Foundational movements and texts that claim the authority to frame the national narrative both in English and Irish (the Irish language texts will be made available in translation) will be examined - as well as the ideals, motivations and aspirations that underpinned them. Romantic, legal, political, colonial and fictional representations of Ireland in literature will interlink in this course to problematise the referents ‘canon’ and ‘nation’ as applied to Ireland over the past millennium. The course will also focus on attempts to foist canonical status on texts to copper-fasten the establishment of two states on the island of Ireland a century ago and on contemporary modes of canonising as a cultural response to political uncertainty. Recent works that collect writing by women, working-class voices and Northern Irish writers will also be examined.
