abstract: In this lecture course, an introduction will be given to one of the most diverse periods of English literary history. Fiction, poetry, and drama will be addressed by focussing on a central antagonism of the 19th century: the tension between the enthusiasm for technological, social, scientific and moral advancement and the desire to recover a spirit of the past, a medieval (or otherwise ideal) religious and social order that appeared to have been lost. A wide range of texts will be covered, from Mary Shelley and Sir Walter Scott to William Morris and Oscar Wilde, via the Brontë sisters, Dickens, the Rossettis, and many others. Everyone should read one novel, however, which captures many of the tensions characteristic of the age: Charles Dickens’s Dombey and Son (1847-48).
