description: Festival of Black British Film held at Tübingen, Germany 31 January - 6 February 2002
abstract: Black British culture has become a vital force in contemporary Britain. Black artists working in the media, in particular, have provided fresh, diverse and challenging representations of Black Britons and a multi-ethnic Britain. Some productions have laid bare the structures and mechanisms of racism and nationalism in everyday life, in the media, and in politics and institutions. Other work by Black British screenwriters and directors has contributed to the refashioning of British identity by offering a critique of and suggestions for culture and society in a globalising world. Black British filmmakers have been centrally involved in the intellectual debates about cultural identities that have flourished in the decades leading up to the 21st century. In order to provide access to and to celebrate the work of Black media practitioners, Tübingen hosted its first festival devoted to Black and Asian filmmaking in Britain from 31 January to 6 February 2002. Black in the Union Jack covered the time span from Horace Ové's Pressure (1975) to Newton Aduaka's Rage (2000), and included feature films, documentaries and short films made by British filmmakers of African, Caribbean and Asian descent. A number of filmmakers attended the festival, and the screenings were accompanied by discussions, readings and lectures.
