description: Vorlesung im SoSe 2008; Montag, 28. April 2008
abstract: This lecture course explores how the notion of a British national identity has evolved historically, from the Early Modern period onwards, in close relation to the experience of Empire. While on the one hand tracing the concrete development of British expansionism in its most important stages, the lecture will on the other hand primarily focus on the complex ways in which Britain's overseas adventures and successes buttressed and possibly even triggered the notion of a specific British identity. Zooming in on some of the multiple ways in which Britons engaged in a process of making sense of the imperial experience, the lecture course combines aspects of landeskunde with questions of representation, othering and identity formation that will be analysed with the help of methodologies typical of Cultural Studies.
