abstract: SQUIDs are the most sensitive detectors for magnetic flux available and are central for MEG and many other fields. In this lecture I will describe the physics of SQUIDs, starting with its central elements - Josephson junctions embedded in a superconducting loop. I will address problems arising from various sources of noise and will introduce examples of readout schemes that are used to minimize this noise, allowing the measurement of the signals of interest.
