abstract: Environmental issues have emerged as key issues of civic organizations all over the world. Most countries have an organizational establishment nowadays that includes transnational organizations like Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth as well as individual organizations on the national, regional and local level. However, these networks are currently changing, opening challenges as well as opportunities for young students in particular. The presentation seeks to raise some of the key questions that environmental groups will have to confront in upcoming years. How global can (and should) environmental NGOs really be? How can they campaign successfully in the information society of the 21st century? Should environmental groups deal with social and economic issues as well? What is the appropriate time frame for NGO work? And how do we merge the experiences that activists have earned with the hopes and expectations of today’s young generation?
