description: Dr. Nicolaus Dahmen: "Synthetic fuels and chemicals from biomass", 22.9.2010, WSES 2010
abstract: After giving some background information about biomass potential and limitations, competivtive use of biomass is adressed. As the storage density of liquids is rather high and liquids are most useful for transportation, they are highly desirable. Use of biofuels in the past and vision, development and research of 2nd and 3rd generation of biofuels are topics of the talk. CO2-reduction potentials, global impacts and chemical pathways linked to these are mentioned. Then, the bioliq-concept as an example is explained in detail (process scheme, fast pyrolysis, high pressure entrained flow gasification; pilot plant at KIT).
