abstract: As acknowledged in Agenda 21, education and educational organizations play a pivotal role in bringing about a change towards more sustainable patterns of consumption. How can schools and universities live up to this challenge? The presentation will address this question in three steps, drawing on approaches developed and experiences made in the context of the research and development project BINK. In the first part, consumption and consumer culture are discussed as multifaceted phenomena that are equally drivers and potentially powerful solutions to meeting sustainability problems. It is argued that in order to spread sustainable consumption practices, consumption needs to be understood and addressed in its sustainability attributes, but in its symbolic, expressive and communicative functions and in its essential contribution to the forming and maintenance of personal identity. Lifestyle approaches can serve as an analytical tool to gain insights on how different types of consumers share similar values and orientations that manifest in distinct consumption practices. The second part focuses on consumer learning and the potentials of educational offers to provide rich learning contexts for a sustainable consumer learning. Such contexts have a twofold character. On one hand schools and universities act as a facilitator of educational offers related to sustainable consumption (formal learning). On the other, they are themselves consumption households and as such places in which organizational members consume (informal learning). Adopting such integrative perspective, an embedded learning approach seeks to integrate formal and informal learning activities on matters of sustainable consumption within the school environment. In the third part, different (typologies of) intervention techniques are discussed that can be implemented to (a) change the organizational »culture of consumption« and to (b) promote sustainable consumption practices among students. By implementing measures of intervention on both ends, educational organizations can become microcosms in which sustainable consumption can be experienced and practiced. As such, they can showcase pathways toward more sustainable consumption practices in the broader society.
