abstract: This lecture course will offer a survey and introduction to Shakespeare and the culture of his time. The focus will be on selected plays which are linked to particular "worlds" or aspect of the world, an approach suggested by the very name and idea of the "Globe" Theatre itself. Besides the stage, which represents "all the world", we will be concerned with the world at large (the earth and the cosmos), the world within the soul, the political and social world, the world as distinct from one’s private self, the world created by lovers, and, last but not least, the world of words. We will read Shakespeare’s poetry (selected sonnets and passages from The Rape of Lucrece) as well as the following plays: As You Like It, Coriolanus, Richard II, Hamlet, King Lear, Pericles, The Tempest, and The Two Noble Kinsmen.
