abstract: This class will introduce you to the study of culture. In the final analysis, it is a class about who we are, why we do the things that we do, and what these things mean. It is based on the assumption that what we do, use, and produce - films and novels, but also clothes and phones and the way we behave and speak - carries culturally specific meanings that we can decipher. Over the course of the semester, you will get acquainted with many useful concepts and theories that will help us to do that. Many of them are a bit complicated, and sometimes what you learn will be counterintuitive and clash with the assumptions you bring to this class. Thus, this course will be challenging and demanding. But if you approach things with an open mind and work together with the tutors and me, it will also be very rewarding. The class has the potential - and I am not kidding - to make you see the world differently.
