The course will briefly outline a history of Indian culture, material and otherwise, and then focus on nineteenth- and twentieth-century India, and the changes that took place. We shall also study some excerpts from classical Sanskrit texts in English translation, and then study some cultural objects from the 19th and 20th centuries. We shall also take into account questions of European and British/American representations of Indian culture. The course will also focus on the variety of cultures that are included in the term Indian Culture. |
