Abstracts: | In this lecture course, a wide range of plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries will be discussed in order to give students an overview of this golden age of English drama. Our guiding notion will be the idea of the Early Modern world as a stage on which roles are to be played and plots pursued. We will focus on the following plays: As regards comedy, we will discuss As You Like It (1600) and A Midsummer Nights Dream (1595) by William Shakespeare; the hilarious metadramatic comedy A Knight of the Burning Pestle (c1607-08) by Francis Beaumont (and John Fletcher); the satirical comedy Volpone (1605-06) by Ben Jonson and the city comedy A Roaring Girl (c1611) by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker. In the field of tragedy, our choice is Doctor Faustus (c1592) by Christopher Marlowe, the revenge tragedies The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd (c1587) and Hamlet (c1601) by Shakespeare. Furthermore, we will consider the history plays Julius Caesar (1599) and King Henry V (1600) by Shakespeare, as well as Shakespeares romance The Winters Tale (c1611). |
