abstract: By taking into account nearly all of Shakespeare’s plays but focusing on two well-known (Hamlet and As You Like It) and two lesser known ones (King John and Cymbeline) we will try and get an idea of Shakespeare’s approaches to dramatic genres (tragedy, comedy, history, romance), of the ways in which he uses language, represents human life (male and female, old and young), takes up and transforms stories and ideas familiar to his contemporaries, and responds to influences from the real world (politics, society, the theatre, ...). The lectures will be linked by reflections on the many ways in which Shakespeare has his characters refer to drama and the stage, to acting and performance. In this perspective, we will also read some of his sonnets.
