abstract:	This lecture course aims at providing an overview of poetry in English by focusing on the various functions that poetry may have. In other words, the approach is not chronological but systematic, but at the same time we will learn about historically and culturally specific features of poetry from the late Medieval period to the present day. The course is organized by function, i.e. by what a poem may do or achieve. For example, poetry may imitate, describe, create something, give pleasure, teach, may make us laugh, pray, play, be a riddle, produce rhythm and music (make us dance or snip our fingers), make things happen, make politicians forbid it. Last but not least, poetry may be medicine (against various kinds of infections) and it may make us love poetry. All relevant texts will be provided online on Moodle. The course itself will be streamed and recorded every week on TIMMS https://timms.uni-tuebingen.de/ with a Moodle forum to ask questions online or afterwards.
