abstract: "Religion has always been an integral part of the literary tradition"; this is how An Introduction to Religion and Literature, edited by Mark Knight (Continuum 2009) is advertised. While this is certainly true in general terms, the statement goes even more so, one might claim, for the early modern period. In this lecture course, the relationship between literature and religion at the time of Shakespeare will be considered and analyzed closely: how do religious debates feed into the literature of the time, in a period that is characterized by religious upheaval and change? what are the religious concepts that feed into literary reflection, both in religious poetry, for instance, but also in drama? how is religion indeed an 'integral part' of the literary culture during the early modern period. Texts discussed in this lecture course will include the poetry and drama by Shakespeare, religious poems by John Donne, George Herbert, Richard Crashaw and Thomas Traherne, Psalm translations from the Book of Common Prayer to verse renderings by the Sidneys, emblems etc. The lecture course will also study how religious thought is reflected on and made productive in the literature of the time.
