description: Vorlesung im SoSe 2026; Dienstag, 07. Juli 2026
abstract: This lecture course will be an introduction to the literature and culture of Shakespeare's time by focusing on the range of textual practises characteristic of the period. To a large extent, it was a world of the word: what to say and how to say it was a key issue in people's lives. We will try and reconstruct this world by considering the many ways in which words became texts. Particular attention will be given to the specific material manifestations of these texts as books, manuscripts, single-print sheets etc. The material addressed will include play-texts, royal entertainments, dialogues, storybooks, pamphlets, treatises, broadside ballads, sermons, prayer books, bibles, classical texts and translations, verse miscellanies, chapbooks, commonplace books, grammar books, recipe collections, manuals, court depositions, letters, contracts, diaries, account books, etc. Most of these texts will be introduced in the course of the lecture series but everyone should read two plays in which different kinds of texts and their production are thematized: William Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost and Ben Jonson's Bartholomew Fair.
